Rakasa

Rakasa drifted through the ballroom like a shadow, her dress whispering across the polished floors as she moved.

The grand hall was alive with muted conversations, laughter, and the faint strains of a slow, haunting melody played by an unseen quartet. Chandeliers glimmered overhead, casting soft, golden light over the sea of finely dressed elites and shimmering gowns. The scent of expensive perfume mingled with the faint aroma of spiced wine, creating a heady atmosphere that made it easy to forget the danger lurking beneath the polished surface.

She had slipped away from Kazis moments before, their fingers brushing briefly in silent farewell before she melted into the crowd.

She didn’t dare look back, but the warmth of his touch lingered.

Her mark was Senator Ailana Vexis—a woman of elegance and influence, known for her sharp wit and the way her gaze could silence a room. She’d watched Ailana for long enough to see the game she played. The senator enjoyed the attention, but more than that—she enjoyed the chase. Rakasa could work with that.

Ailana’s eyes were assessing, and each time their paths intersected, they lingered on Rakasa just a moment longer—an invitation waiting to be answered.

She made her approach slowly, weaving through the crowd with grace. She saw Ailana notice her out of the corner of her eye—a flicker of curiosity, followed by a slight smile hinting at something more.

“Senator Vexis,” Rakasa said as she reached her, her voice carrying just enough reverence to flatter without groveling. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

Ailana turned fully to face her, arching a delicate brow. “The honor is mine,” Ailana said smoothly, her voice carrying the rich cadence of a politician. Her eyes, however, were focused intently on her, taking in every detail with almost clinical precision. “I don’t believe we’ve been introduced.”

Rakasa offered a demure smile, inclining her head slightly. “I’m Verena Daris, a trader from Khem-Tah. My partner insisted we attend tonight, but I feel rather out of place without a familiar face.” It wasn’t entirely a lie—deception had to be woven with a hint of truth to be believable.

Ailana chuckled softly, her expression softening. “Then I shall do my best to make you feel welcome.” There was a gleam of interest in the senator’s eyes that Rakasa recognized—an opportunity.

She hesitated for only a heartbeat before lowering her voice, allowing a note of uncertainty to creep in. “I’m not much of a dancer, but perhaps if I had a willing partner...”

Ailana’s smile widened, the subtle shift in her posture indicating her decision. “Well then,” she said, offering a hand. “Shall we?”

She took the senator’s hand, allowing herself to be led to the dance floor. Anxiety surged for a moment, but she kept her expression serene, channeling the quiet confidence she had cultivated through cycles of deception and survival.

Ailana’s hand settle on her waist, their fingers interlacing as they began to move in time with the music.

“Khem-Tah, you said? Are you from Caerulia, the human sector in Khem-Tah?” Ailana asked.

“Yes, I was born there.
